Former Washington center Len Hauss dies at the age of 79

According to Olly Dawes of 24ssports.com, former Washington Redskins Len Hauss of Jesup, Georgia passed away on Wednesday at the age of 79 of a prolonged illness. The passing was confirmed by Len’s daughter Lana.

Hauss spent 14 seasons with the Redskins from 1964 to 1977. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for five of those seasons–in 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1972.

In 196 games, and 194 starts, Hauss had five fumble recoveries for eight yards. His longest fumble recovery came in 1967, which was for six yards. Hauss is best known for his stamina and reliability. Of his 194 starts, he started 192 consecutive games. Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre, who is considered the ninth best player on the Sporting Base’s all-time list, has the NFL record for most consecutive games played with 297 from 1992 to 2010.

With Washington, Hauss played in Super Bowl VII. Washington lost however 14-7 to the Miami Dolphins from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The game was famous because the Dolphins became the first and only team ever to go through an entire season (regular season and playoffs) undefeated. Hauss was also part of the NFL’s All-Pro second team in 1974 and 1975.

Hauss was initially selected by Washington in the ninth round, 115th overall in the 1964 National Football League draft out of the University of Georgia. While with the Bulldogs, Hauss was on the All-Southeastern Conference team in only his second year in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1961.

Hauss was later inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in Macon, Georgia  in 1981. The complex is famous for being the largest sports hall of fame in the United States at 43,000 square feet.
