Dolphins sign offensive tackle Terron Armstead

The Miami Dolphins have had a busy week in improving their offense. In addition to acquiring six-time Pro Bowler and 2020 Super Bowl champion Tyreek Hill in a blockbuster trade on Wednesday, the Dolphins have signed offensive tackle Terron Armstead to a five-year deal worth $87.5 million according to ESPN on Tuesday.

Armstead comes to Miami after nine seasons with the New Orleans Saints. From 2013 to 2021, he played 93 games with the Saints. In that time, Armstead was selected to the Pro Bowl on three occasions (in 2018, and 2019, and 2020), and was credited for giving excellent protection for Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who retired in 2021.

At 30 years of age, Armstead is a native of Belleville, Illinois. While attending high school at Cahokia, Illinois, Armstead grew from 6’2″, 250 pounds in his junior year, to 6’4″, 300 pounds in his senior year. He is currently 6’5″, 305 pounds. Also as a high school student, Armstead won the 2009 Illinois State high school  title in men’s shot put with a throw of 61 feet and five inches. In addition to competing in shot put, Armstead also threw the discus, making him an elite multi-sport athlete.

Armstead was initially a third round draft pick, 75th overall, in the 2013 National Football League Draft. He played his National Collegiate Athletic Association career at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. While there are many elite NCAA teams in the Southeastern Athletic Conference, teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference generally play under the radar. In 2018, Armstead was a second team All-Pro while with the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions.
