Cowboys Play The Eagles In The 2019 Version Of The NFL’s Toilet Bowl

The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles play for the NFC East Division lead on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia. Both teams are at seven wins and seven losses, and many would agree that neither team deserves to be in the playoff conversation, let alone for a division title and a chance to host a playoff game. However, due to the NFL’s quirky system, once in a while you get situations like this where teams that are not deserving of a playoff spot finding their way in.

But c’mon! It is not far fetched to claim that the Cowboys and Eagles have simply stunk this season. Let’s give a golf clap to the Eagles for beating two horrendously awful NFC East teams–the Washington Redskins and New York Giants the last two weeks. Prior to that, Philadelphia got beaten 37-31 to a 3-11 Miami Dolphins team when they could not protect a 28-14 lead in the third quarter.

The Eagles also lost to an Atlanta Falcons team who only won once in their first eight games. Who was their opponent in their lone win in this disastrous stretch? You guessed it. The Eagles. Philadelphia also lost in week three 27-24 to the Detroit Lions. Since that loss to the Lions on September 22, Detroit has only won once.

The Cowboys meanwhile hammered the Eagles 37-10 in their lone meeting on October 20. After a 3-0 start, Dallas has gone 4-7 in their last 11 games. Their most embarrassing loss this year came against the New York Jets on October 13 in a strange 24-22 defeat.

After beating the Lions 35-27 on November 17, the Cowboys seemed to be in the driver’s seat to win the NFC East as they were 6-4 at the time. Not so fast. They ended up losing their next three games to the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears when their offense completely got out of sync. All of a sudden they were at six wins and seven losses, but got back to the .500 mark with a 44-21 win over the Los Angeles Rams last week.

In the NFC, the Eagles and Cowboys are battling for a divisional title, when the Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have already been eliminated from the playoffs at 7-7. The Los Angeles Rams are at 8-6, and not in a playoff spot. In the AFC, the Tennessee Titans, like the Rams, are also two games above .500 but are not in a playoff position.

It should be noted this is a more important game for the Eagles than the Cowboys. Even though both teams are at 7-7, the Eagles are eliminated from the postseason with a loss, while the Cowboys clinch the NFC East title with a win.

In evaluating the Eagles and Cowboys play this year, both teams deserve a grade between a C and a D. Simply put, they stink. The winner Sunday is the 2019 winner of the NFL’s Toilet Bowl.
