Chiefs sign offensive lineman Joe Thuney

One of the biggest takeaways from the Super Bowl this past February was how horrendous the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line performed. They were that awful in failing to protect the cornerstone of the franchise, Patrick Mahomes.

Changes were going to be made. First, they cut Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz. Who cares if Fisher was the first overall pick from the 2013 National Football League Draft? For those that did not get the memo, the NFL is all about what have you done for me lately, and in the Chiefs opinion, Fisher was simply not good enough in 2020.

On Monday, the Chiefs took their first step to rectify their problem. According to KMBC, Kansas City has signed veteran offensive lineman Joe Thuney to a five-year deal worth $80 million.

Thuney has five years of NFL experience with the New England Patriots since being selected in the third round, 78th overall, out of North Carolina State. A second-team All-Pro in 2019, Thuney has a wealth of experience in protecting another star quarterback, in Tom Brady.

During his time with the Patriots, Thuney also won two Super Bowls in 2017 and 2019. In his rookie season of 2016, Thuney was named to an all-rookie team as a guard. When the Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in the 2019 Super Bowl, Thuney was praised for his ability to contain Rams star defender Aaron Donald. He also made NFL history by becoming the first player ever to start in three straight Super Bowls to begin his NFL career. The Patriots lost the 2018 Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles.

More help for the Chiefs offensive line is expected. After taking a year off to help those Quebec impacted by coronavirus, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is expected to return to the Chiefs in 2021.
