2021 NFL Week 1 Preview: Our Expert Tips & Staking Plan

The NFL is back and we are bringing you our tips once again. Last season was a success under very difficult circumstances with the pandemic so hopefully, things will be a little easier this year.

I will likely be adding some more picks before the games so make sure to check back.

Los Angeles Chargers @ Washington Football Team

At this stage of the season it is about trusting your evaluations of teams and trying to work out which teams are over or underrated. Right at the top of my list of overrated teams is Washington. They won the division last season but it was at 7-9. Ryan Fitzpatrick will be at quarterback and while he can be fun and has great games, he is a turnover machine. The Chargers have on the of the best defensive coaches in the league at head coach and he will be able to come up with a great plan to take advantage of that.

The Chargers should only be stronger on offence as Justin Herbert enters his second season after being named rookie of the year. If he can take a step forward than LA have a team to threaten anyone.

I can’t find any solid lines right now but this is a game where I will be looking to back some turnover props.

Arizona Cardinals @ Tennessee Titans

It is being a little under talked about how important Arthur Smith was to this Titans offence. People are rating Tennessee as if they are just going to pick up where they left off, but we have seen in the past how big of a difference an offensive coordinator can make. Kyle Shanahan at the Falcons is the obvious one. I think we will see some issues early in the season and while I think they may well win this game, I am expecting a sloppier offensive game than the line suggests. I am avoiding picking a team here – for now at least – but the under is very intriguing.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Buffalo Bills

The Steelers are a team I seem to like a lot more than the consensus. They have phenomenal weapons on offence and if Ben Roethlisberger can be even 80% then the offence should be good. And defensively they have a chance to be excellent again. TJ Watt is my pick for defensive player of the year and he can cause Josh Allen and co problems all day.

I do like the Bills but I just don’t like giving the Steelers 6.5 points in almost any game. They have a good coach and a blow out seems unlikely. It may be worth betting this one late and hoping it moves to 7, but 6.5 or even 6 is a line where I like Pittsburgh a lot.

San Francisco 49ers @ Detroit Lions

There is not much to say about the Lions other than that they may be one of the worst teams in the league on both offence and defence.

The 49ers were ravaged by injury last season. But now they have their first choice quarterback, tight end, wide receivers and running backs available. If they can stay healthy – which has not been the case in recent years – then they are going to be a Super Bowl contender. Shanahan is one of the my favourite coaches in the league and I am very excited to see what he can do with a full set of players.

Chicago Bears @ Los Angeles Rams

The Bears have named Andy Dalton as starter and it is a decision that, for me, ends any hopes this season. Dalton just isn’t good enough to be starting games in the NFL.

The Rams on the other hand have gone all in on their incredible defence by trading for Matthew Stafford and if he can hit the ground running then they may be the biggest threat to the Buccaneers in the NFC. This is the first time the Rams will have fans in their new stadium and they could put on a show.
