NFL suspends troubled wide receiver Antonio Brown eight games
August 3, 2020
The National Football League has suspended troubled wide receiver Antonio Brown of Miami, Florida for eight games according to Jay Croft and Homero De La Fuente of CNN on Saturday. Brown only played one game last season with the New England Patriots. Brown is still a free agent, and it will now be interesting to see if anyone decides to take a chance on the 32-year-old.
Brown is being suspended for burglary and battery charges along with sending intimidating texts to a woman. He has pleaded no contest to the allegations.
Prior to the start of the 2019 National Football League season, expectations were high for Brown. In 2018, he led the NFL in receiving touchdowns with 15 while as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Brown was then traded on March 9, 2019 to the Oakland Raiders for a third and fifth-round draft pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
However Brown never played a single game for Oakland. Prior to the start of the regular season, he missed two team practice sessions and then posted his fines on Instagram. Brown also got into a confrontation with Raiders general manager Mike Mayock. On September 6, Brown addressed his Raiders teammates and apologized for his actions. At this time, he was still expected to suit up for the Raiders in week one. However, a day later, Brown demanded his release from Oakland. The Raiders had decided to void the guaranteed money in his contract and fined him $215,000 for the altercation with Mayock.
Brown was not a free agent for long. He signed a one year contract with the New England Patriots worth $15 million. Brown had an impact for the Patriots in his New England debut. He caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady in a 43-0 Patriots win over the Miami Dolphins. However, Brown was then released by the Patriots prior to week three for sending intimidating text messages to a woman who had accused him of sexual misconduct.
