NFL Fantasy Preview: Dallas Cowboys
August 25, 2021
In a 32-part series leading up to the start of the 2021 National Football League season, we will take a look at each NFL franchise from a fantasy perspective. The ninth team we will review is the Dallas Cowboys.
What can we see about those Cowboys? Well, things were going fine offensively for Dallas last season a year ago from a fantasy perspective until disaster struck. That is when quarterback Dak Prescott broke and dislocated his right ankle! YIKES! Yes, it was a tough moment for me personally to see, as Prescott was my quarterback in my own fantasy football pool.
In Prescott’s five-game stint before his injury against the New York Football Giants, he completed 151 passes in 222 attempts for 1856 yards, nine touchdowns, and four interceptions. Yes, folks. Prescott was averaging a gaudy 371.2 passing yards per game, and his 68% completion percentage was a career-high.
Prescott will now be in Dallas for the long-term. In March, he signed a four-year deal worth $160 million.Â
As in the case of Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey who is returning from injury, show a little bit of restraint before selecting Prescott. It may take him some time before coming back onto the field at the same level he did at the beginning of the 2020 NFL season. I have him as the 10th-ranked fantasy quarterback, just behind Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens.

At the running back position, Ezekiel Elliott is ranked 12th. Last year he had 171.7 fantasy points, but he should benefit with stronger numbers in 2021 if Prescott plays a full season. and he is healthy himself. Last year, he had 244 rushes for 979 yards, and six touchdowns, along with 52 catches for 338 yards and two touchdowns.
When it comes to receivers, Amari Cooper is ranked 19th and CeeDee Lamb is right behind at number 20. Cooper had 92 catches for 1114 yards and five touchdowns in 2020, Lamb had 74 catches for 935 yards and five touchdowns in a strong rookie season after being selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of the University of Oklahoma.
In the later rounds, Michael Gallup is a safe pick as he will also get his fair share of looks from Prescott. In 2020, Gallup had 59 catches for 843 yards and five touchdowns. Fantasy football fans will be hoping that Gallup returns to his 2019 numbers where he had 66 catches for 1107 yards and six touchdowns. However, a return to his 2019 totals could be difficult for Gallup with Lamb in the mix.
Finally, at the kicker position, the veteran Greg Zuerlein had the third most fantasy football points last year with 173. However, he only made three of nine field goal attempts last year at 50 yards or over, and is coming off off-season back surgery.
As long as I have followed football, the Cowboys have been America’s team. They not only have a loyal fanbase throughout the United States, but the rest of the world too. However, things did not go according to plan in 2020, as they only won six games in the very weak NFC East. If everyone stays healthy in 2021, the Cowboys should contend for a division title.
