Two National Football League coaches have made coronavirus headlines over the last week. On Friday, ESPN reported that Minnesota Vikings assistant coach Rick Dennison of Kalispell, Montana may not be coaching this season because he is refusing the coronavirus vaccine. Then on Monday, Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich announced he has tested positive for coronavirus even though he has been vaccinated according to the Associated Press.
Reich stated in a statement released by the Colts that he is fully vaccinated, and is asymptomatic. The positive test comes at a time when the Colts are starting training camp. Reich is not expected to miss much time with Indianapolis, and his assistants will take a larger role in the meantime. Reich is expected to spend a lot of time in training camp with newly acquired quarterback Carson Wentz, who the Colts acquired in the offseason from the Philadelphia Eagles.
With Reich absent from practice, the Colts assistant coaches who are expected too take on a larger role are offensive coordinator Marcus Brady, defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, and special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone. Brady, who is extremely popular in Canada because he was a quarterback for seven seasons with the Toronto Argonauts, is in his first year with the Colts as their offensive coordinator.
Dennison meanwhile was in his third season with the Vikings after winning three Super Bowls as a coach with the Denver Broncos. He was in charge of the Vikings offensive line and run game. The former linebacker played for the Broncos from 1982 to 1990.
