The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly reached out to Tyreek Hill’s agent about a reunion after losing receivers Tyquan Thornton and Rashee Rice to injury in their 30-27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Athletic’s Mike Silver reported that the Chiefs are “very interested” in bringing Hill back and have already contacted his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, as relayed by ProFootballTalk. ESPN also reported that a Chiefs source said after the game “we’ve remained in contact” with Hill and Rosenhaus. Neither the Chiefs nor Hill had announced any agreement at the time of writing.
Chiefs receiver room hit hard
Thornton, who led Kansas City with five catches for a career-high 111 yards and two touchdowns, was carted off in the fourth quarter at Allegiant Stadium after a 55-yard catch, when he was tackled from behind by Raiders rookie safety Treydan Stukes. Sources told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that Thornton had dislocated his left ankle, which team doctors put back into place, ESPN reported.
ESPN said the Chiefs consider Thornton out indefinitely. Coach Andy Reid said he would have a full evaluation on Monday morning (US time), and Thornton is also expected to get a second opinion.
“That doesn’t look good,” Reid said of the ankle. “His attitude is unbelievable. He’s great for the team and kind of a leader of that [receivers] group.”
Rice left in the first quarter with a right hamstring injury. ESPN reported that Reid did not seem too concerned after the game and that Rice was held out for the rest of the match as a precaution, but Silver later reported that Rice could be out for several weeks, according to NBC Sports. Yahoo Sports noted that Xavier Worthy has also been dealing with a shoulder injury, although he played against Las Vegas.
Through four weeks, Rice and Thornton had combined for 24 catches, 409 yards and three touchdowns, according to ESPN. The win kept the Chiefs unbeaten at 4-0.
Kelce, Mahomes and Jones keen on a reunion
Silver also spoke to several Chiefs players after the game, and they backed the idea of Hill returning, ProFootballTalk reported.
“That’s out of my hands, but I know I’d love to have ‘The Cheetah’ back in this building,” tight end Travis Kelce said. “He’s a brother. He’s one of those people who, when he sets his mind to something, he usually delivers. You saw that with Miami, when all the haters were saying he couldn’t play and he went and had his best year. I’d be excited by what he could do (here).”
“I have no idea [if that would happen], but it’d be pretty cool,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes said.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones was more direct: “I hope we do. It’d be dangerous. . . . Dangerous!”
Where Hill’s comeback stands
Hill, 32, has not played since dislocating his left knee and tearing multiple ligaments, including his ACL, in Week 4 of last season with the Miami Dolphins, according to ESPN. Miami released him in February, and he has been a free agent since. Silver reported that Hill is targeting a November return, and ESPN said the Chiefs believe the same.
Hill posted “hm” on X after Thornton was hurt, ProFootballTalk noted. Last week he wrote on X: “It’s almost time to get off the couch and get to work.”
The Chiefs drafted Hill in the fifth round in 2016, and he made the Pro Bowl in each of his six seasons in Kansas City, winning Super Bowl LIV, before he was traded to Miami in 2022. He led the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards for the Dolphins in 2023. We looked at why Hill could return to the Chiefs when Miami released him in February.
