Mavericks name Jason Kidd head coach

According to Schuyler Dixon of the Associated Press, the Dallas Mavericks have named Jason Kidd as their new head coach. Kidd joins the Mavericks, after being the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2013 to 2014, and the Milwaukee Bucks from 2014 to 2018. In the last two seasons, Kidd was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers, and was on the coaching staff led by Frank Vogel. In 2019-20, the Lakers won the NBA Finals by beating the Miami Heat in six games.

Despite coaching some very good teams, Kidd had a losing record as a head coach. In 373 regular season games, he had a record of 183 wins and 190 losses for a winning percentage of .491. Kidd’s postseason winning percentage is even worse at .375, as he has only won nine of 24 games.

The Bucks, Kidd’s former team he has coached in the past, are currently in the Eastern Conference Finals, under the leadership of head coach Mike Budenholzer. Milwaukee has the two games to one series lead over the Atlanta Hawks after a 113-102 win in game three of the series on Sunday.

Kidd of San Francisco, California, takes over the coaching reigns from Rick Carlisle, who had been with Dallas from 2008 to 2021. Carlisle resigned from the Mavericks and became the new head coach of the Indiana Pacers.

As a player, Kidd played eight seasons with the Mavericks in two different stints. The first came from 1994 to 1997, and the second came from 2007 to 2012. He averaged 10.5 points per game, and 8.4 assists per game. Considered an elite point guard, Kidd led the NBA in assists five times, and was a NBA All-Star 10 times. As well as playing for the Mavericks, Kidd also played for the Phoenix Suns, New Jersey Nets, and New York Knicks. In addition to Kidd, the Mavericks hired Nico Harrison as their general manager.
