Celtics sign guard Dennis Schroder

According to Tim Bontemps of ESPN on Tuesday, the Boston Celtics have signed guard Dennis Schroder of Braunschweig, Germany to a one-year contract worth $5.9 million. Schroder is joining his fourth NBA franchise after five seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, two seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and one season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Schroder played in 61 games with the Lakers in 2020-21, and started all 61. That was in sharp contrast to his time in Oklahoma City, where he only started 16 of 144 games from 2018 to 2020. During his time with the Thunder, he was known for his strong performances coming off the bench. 

Last season, Schroder averaged 15.4 points per game, 5.8 assists per game, 3.5 rebounds per game, a .437 field goal percentage, a .335 three-point percentage, and a .848 free throw percentage.

Schroder was initially selected in the first round, 17th overall, by the Hawks in the 2013 NBA Draft. He is one of seven Germans in NBA history to be selected in the first round. He follows Detlef Schrempf, who was selected eighth overall by the Dallas Mavericks in 1985, Uwe Blab, who was selected 17th overall by the Mavericks in 1985, Chris Welp, who was selected 16th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1987, Dirk Nowitzki, who was selected ninth overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1998, and Chris Kaman, who was selected sixth overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2003. Then three years ago, the Los Angeles Lakers drafted Moritz Wagner 25th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft.

In his home country of Germany, Schroder is the owner of Braunschweig. He previously played four seasons with Braunschweig from 2010 to 2013.
