NBA mourns loss of Hall of Famer Al Attles

Basketball Hall of Famer and Warriors legend Al Attles today passed away in his Bay Area home aged 87, the team announced.

Attles spent more than 60 years with the Warriors as a player, coach, executive and ambassador.

The 39th pick in the 1960 NBA Draft, Attles spent 11 seasons as a player with the Philadelphia and San Francisco Warriors.

He took over as player-coach in his final season before assuming the role as full-time head coach upon his retirement in 1971.

He coached the Warriors to an NBA championship in 1975 and remained the team’s coach until 1983 when he moved into a front office role.

The New Jersey-native was a co-recipient of the National Basketball Coaches Association’s Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 before being inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Away from basketball, Attles attained bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and History from North Carolina A&T State University along with a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction.
