Moody Backs Hefel And Reaps The Rewards

PETER Moody’s decision to leave Carleen Hefel on his in-form mare Sigh told you all you needed to know regarding what he thinks of the mature age apprentice’s ability.

Hefel backed up the master trainer’s faith by producing the ride of the race to capture her first Group 3 event with only her 43rd city winner when she won the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday.

On Sigh she bided her time back in the field and then was able to find an inside run seamlessly when they turned for home.

In the final race again Hefel out rode her more illustrious counterparts with her ride on Flash Flood which was the ride of the day.

There were some similarities with the previous ride as Hefel had Flash Flood travelling well in the straight but she just needed to get a run. She didn’t panic and although late in the race it eventually came.

The 33-year-old Hefel, who has worked as a horse breaker, is in a battle with Celine Gaudray to win the Melbourne Apprentice’s Title.

Hefel has ridden 31 winners and leads Gaudray on 28 by three winners. They are vying to become only the second woman rider to win the Melbourne Apprentices’ Title with Katelyn Mallyon the only one to have won it. She won it twice, with her first in 2011-12 and then again two years later.

Gaudray also demonstrated her exquisite riding skills with a winning double scoring on Thorin and Kin at the same meeting.

Both Gaudray and Hefel have the talent to be regular fixtures at the main city meetings for their careers.
