The New York Mets are the worst team in baseball and their losing streak is now at 12 games. On Tuesday, the Mets lost their 12th straight game after being beat 5-3 by the Minnesota Twins.
New York’s regular season record at the moment is seven wins and 16 losses for a winning percentage of .304. They are now eight and a half games back of the first place Atlanta Braves in the National League East. During the losing streak, the Mets have been outscored 67-22.
The losing streak began on April 8 when they were beaten 7-2 by the Arizona Diamondbacks. They then lost 7-1 to the Diamondbacks, swept by the Athletics from scores of 4-0, 11-6 and 1-0, swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers by scores of 4-0, 2-1 and 8-2, and swept by the Chicago Cubs by scores of 12-4, 4-2 and 2-1.
One loyal Mets fan since 1986 texted me today to say the “pitching has been decent.” Not really. The Mets have given up seven runs or more in five games during the streak and have averaged 5.6 runs per game. This Mets fan is even an accountant who claims he is good with numbers.
Another shocking story is how much the Mets are underachieving when you take a look at their payroll. They have the highest total allocation at $334 million. There is no doubt the Juan Soto injury has hurt the Mets, but Jorge Polanco was only batting .179 before he went on the injury list. On the mound, David Peterson has an earned run average of 5.40, Kodai Senga has an earned run average of 8.83 and new closer Devin Williams has an earned run average of 9.95.
