The Orlando Magic have named Sean Sweeney of Saint Paul, Minnesota as their new head coach according to nba.com on Monday. This is Sweeney’s first head coaching job in the National Basketball Association.
Sweeney has been a veteran assistant coach in the NBA. He was with the New Jersey Nets before the franchise moved to Brooklyn as their video coordinator during the 2011-12 season. Sweeney then had video coordinator duties the first year the Nets franchise was in Brooklyn in 2012-13, and then was promoted to the role of assistant coach in 2013-14. Then from 2014 to 2018, Sweeney was an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks. He was also an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons for three seasons from 2018 to 2021, and an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks for four seasons from 2021 to 2025.
Then in 2025-26, Sweeney was promoted to the role of associate head coach with the San Antonio Spurs. However, due to the fact that the Spurs are in the NBA Finals this season, Sweeney will not begin his new role as head coach of the Magic until San Antonio’s season is complete.
Sweeney takes over the head coaching duties in Orlando from Jamahl Mosley. The reason why the Magic fired Mosley in my opinion is because the Magic could not deliver a first round upset against the Detroit Pistons. Orlando had a three games to be lead in the series, had a 22 point lead in game six (only to lose 93-79), and once again came up flat in game seven in a 116-94 loss, as the Pistons won their third straight game to close out the first round series.
