Luke Keary to retire at the end of the year
April 29, 2024
Despite being contracted through to the end of the 2025 NRL season, tricolours vice-captaion Luke Keary has made the huge call to hang up the boots at the end of this Sydney Roosters campaign.
“After 12 seasons and 27 years playing the game I love, I have decided this will be my last and that I will be retiring at the end of the year. It’s a decision I have thought long and hard about and I know it’s the right one for me and my family,” Keary said in a press release uploaded by the Roosters on Monday.

Keary debuted for Roosters arch-rivals the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2013 and won a premiership in the cardinal and myrtle in 2014 before moving to the Bondi glamour club in 2017.
Since joining Trent Robinson’s powerhouse outfit, the now-32-year-old became a staple in the tricolours halves and won back-to-back premierships in 2018 and 2019 alongside eminent halfback Cooper Cronk.
“Rugby league has been a huge part of my life, and I’m proud of the career I’ve had,” Keary said.
Keary’s surprise call leaves the Roosters with more and more holes appearing in its star-studded roster. The 32-year-old five-eighth joins Jared Waerea-Hargraves (Super League) and a trio of rugby defectors—Angus Crichton, Joseph Suaalii, and Joey Manu—in the exodus, with Daniel Tupou also tipped to retire at the end of the year.

The Sporting Base understands the Roosters bosses have already made in-roads to re-sign incumbent Sydney halfback Sam Walker after Keary gave them the news late last week.
