Lucas Glover of Greenville, South Carolina has won the 2021 John Deere Classic. On Sunday, he defeated fellow Americans Kevin Na and Ryan Moore by two strokes after posting a four-round score of -19. Glover had scores of three-under-par 68 in round one, eight-under-par 63 in round two, one-under-par 70 in round three, and seven-under-par 64 in round four.
In Glover’s best round of the tournament on Friday, he had eight birdies compared to zero bogeys. This is the fourth title of his career. Glover is best known for winning the 2009 United States Open at Bethpage Black. He also won the 2005 FUNAI Classic at Walt Disney World, and the 2011 Wells Fargo Championship.
Glover’s win in Silvis, Illinois on Sunday came three years after his wife Krista was charged and sentenced to a one-year probation for a highly-publicized altercation with Lucas’s mother Hershey at a rental house during the 2018 Players Championship near Jacksonville, Florida. According to Josh Berhow of golf.com, Glover’s struggles at the Players Championship were a possible factor in the altercation. Lucas Glover told local police that every time he plays poorly, Krista starts yelling at him and calls him a “loser.”
The golf world will now center on the British Open which starts Thursday from Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, England. The story leading up to the tournament is not who is there, but who is not. Among the players absent include 2020 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama (who tested positive for coronavirus prior to the Rocket Mortage Classic last week in Detroit), two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson (who was in close contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus), 2001 British Open champion David Duval, Kevin Na, and Matthew Wolff. In all, 13 players have withdrawn from the final major of 2021 according to the Associated Press on Sunday.
