Latrell knuckles down on fitness after Bennett spray

Latrell Mitchell has started an offseason fitness regime to get in tip-top shape before he reports back to preseason training with the South Sydney Rabbitohs under the watchful gaze of returning boss Wayne Bennett.

Mitchell has been working his way back from a foot injury that he suffered soon after State of Origin that had ruled him out for the remainder of the 2024 NRL season.

The NRL world has taken notice this week after Latrell popped up looking fit in new photos.

The buzz comes after reports Mitchell has shunned alcohol, demolishing a previously installed private bar in his family home to make way for a personal gymnasium with weights, yoga mats and a two-person sauna – a huge move that’s already seen the 27-year-old lose 5kg and return closer to his younger Roosters size in the process.

The Souths fullback was reportedly motivated to get working after a Wayne Bennet spray where he warned the playing group anyone returning to preseason training unfit would be dealt out punishments.

Mitchell responded nearly immediately with his home renovations, sources have said.

When asked about it as he prepared to formally begin his second South Sydney tenure on Monday though, Bennett said he hadn’t specifically been worried about Latrell; every player had been under his scope, the veteran supercoach instead insisted.

“Latrell’s fitness won’t be an issue for me,” Bennett declared. “I haven’t spoken to Latrell but if he’s in shape that’s great. He has been dealt with by the club [over the substance saga].
