Your Ultimate Caufield Cup Form Guide

October 19, 2018

By Lindsay

With the Caulfield Cup set to race tomorrow, we wanted to give you an in-depth guide to all of runners.

1.Best Solution

  • Trainer: S Bin Suroor
  • Jockey: P Cosgrover
  • Barrier: 17

An overseas raider who brings terrific European form winning the Prince of Wales at Newmarket before winning two Group 1 races in Germany. Obviously has the talent but prepared to risk at his first start in Australia as a lot of these European horses usually take 1 run to warm up. One to watch for the Melbourne Cup.

2. The Cliffsofmoher

  • Trainer: A O’Brien
  • Jockey: H Bowman
  • Barrier: 3

Top pick out of the international runners. Has had 2 warm up runs with the latest being an eye catching 4th in the Caufield Stakes last start. Aidan O’Brien is a world class trainer and H Bowman is a great booking. Drawn to get an ideal run. Major player.

Odds: $8       Click Here to bet now

3. Chestnut Coat

  • Trainer: Y Yahagi
  • Jockey: Y Kawada
  • Barrier: 13

Japanese import that was disappointing finishing 11th in a Group 2 in the land of the rising sun last start. Japanese have great record in the Cups but prefer to watch this start.

Odds: $19       Click Here to bet now

4. Jon Snow

  • Trainer: Baker & Forsman
  • Jockey: D Lane
  • Barrier: 15

Sat 3 wide the trip to finish 4L behind Winx in the the Turnbull last start after finishing 3rd in the Makybe Diva Stakes two starts back. Finished 9th in this race last year. Could run a race at huge odds.

Odds: $41       Click Here to bet now

5. Sound Check

  • Trainer: M Moroney
  • Jockey: J Childs
  • Barrier: 16

Former European who has been purchased by Victorian connections to have a tilt at the Cups. Another that is having his first start in Australia. Finished a close second to Best Solution in Germany last start and gets a 2kg swing on him here which is really appealing. Prepared to risk with a firm eye on for Melbourne Cup.

Odds: $27      Click Here to bet now

6. Ace High

  • Trainer: D Payne
  • Jockey: D Oliver
  • Barrier: 8

Rising Sydney 4yo that was tough as nails winning the Hill Stakes last start. There are queries around the form of that race but hard to knock a winner. Finished second in the Derby during the Autumn. Has the ideal gate and looks to be a stayer on the rise. Respect.

Odds: $12      Click Here to bet now

7. The Taj Mahal

  • Trainer: L Howley
  • Jockey: J McDonald
  • Barrier: 19

Sat wide before pushing forward in a tough win in the JRA Cup at Mooney Valley last start. Will press forward here in a race that doesn’t look to have a whole lot of speed on paper. Was a dominant winner of the Zipping Classic last Spring. Last 50m may be the query.

Odds: $18       Click Here to bet now

8. Duretto

  • Trainer: A Balding
  • Jockey: D Dunn
  • Barrier: 1

Another coming out of the Princes of Wales Handicap at Newmarket where he finished less than a length behind Best Solution. Meets him 2.5kg better here and has won since. Another one to keep an eye on for the first Tuesday in November.

Odds: $23      Click Here to bet now

9. Red Verdon

  • Trainer: E Dunlop
  • Jockey: Z Purton
  • Barrier: 9

Coming back sharply in distance after disappointing in the Lonsdale Cup in York 8 weeks ago. Has been a perennial bridesmaid finishing 2nd in previous 4 starts. Other Internationals look more appealing.

Odds: $23      Click Here to bet now

10. Vengeur Masque

  • Trainer: M Moroney
  • Jockey: P Moloney
  • Barrier: 7

Finished midfield in the Bart Cummings last start but drops 3kg in weight for this rise in class. Would have to improve dramatically.

Odds: $101      Click Here to bet now

11. Ventura Storm

  • Trainer: Hayes & Dabernig
  • Jockey: R Bayliss
  • Barrier: 11

Form was ordinary before running on superbly to finish 1.8L behind Winx last start. Form was poor before that but you cannot discount Hayes’ ability to get them ready for these big races. Way over the odds and expecting him to run well.

Odds: $31       Click Here to bet now

12. Might Boss

  • Trainer: M Price
  • Jockey: T Clark
  • Barrier: 15

Finished second in the Turnbull last start and form before that hasn’t been much better. Look elsewhere.

Odds: $101      Click Here to bet now

13. Homesman

  • Trainer: L Howley
  • Jockey: Ben Melham
  • Barrier: 4

Will make his own luck by sitting up on the speed. Won the Underwood 2 starts back and was a touch disappointing in the Cauflied Stakes last start  fading away to finish 3.7L back. Can win it with his best.

Odds: $12      Click Here to bet now

14. Kings Will Dream

  • Trainer: D Weir
  • Jockey: C Williams
  • Barrier: 6

Firmed right into favouritism after a dream draw earlier in the week. Finished 1.75L third to Winx last start and form before that has been excellent without winning. There may be others around the same mark with better odds but hard to rule him out.

Odds: $5      Click Here to bet now

15. Sole Impact

  • Trainer: H Toda
  • Jockey: R Sakai
  • Barrier: 20

Horror barrier for this Japanese grey but they usually come and race on the speed which may help that. Has mixed form in his homeland and couldn’t get too excited without seeing him produce something here.

Odds: $67      Click Here to bet now

16. Gallic Chieftain

  • Trainer: D Weir
  • Jockey: D Yendall
  • Barrier: 2

On closer inspection his last 2 runs have been more impressive than they look on paper. Sat 3-5 deep the trip to still run on for fourth in the Herbert Power last start after running home strongly to just miss by a nose in the JRA Cup. Huge odds and could be peaking here.

Odds: $61      Click Here to bet now

17. Nights Watch

  • Trainer: D Weir
  • Jockey: B Allen
  • Barrier: 18

Finished 3.5L 6th in Caufield Stakes last start but narrowly won the Naturalism the start before. Rise in class here but the barrier is a huge hindrance.

Odds: $18      Click Here to bet now

18. Younstar

  • Trainer: C Waller
  • Jockey: K McEvoy
  • Barrier: 10

Another Sydney 4yo on the rise. Great run in the Turnbull last start to go down by a length to Winx, as close as anything has got to her for a long time. Before that had good form in Sydney over shorter distances. No weight on her back on has the in form hoop aboard. Major player.

Odds: $6      Click Here to bet now

19. Patrick Erin:

  • Trainer: C Waller
  • Jockey: C Brown
  • Barrier: 12

Winner of the Metropolitan last start and is hoping for one to be scratched to gain a start here. This may be a bit too strong for him.

Odds: $51      Click Here to bet now

20. Jaameh

  • Trainer: Hayes & Dabernig
  • Jockey: C Parish
  • Barrier: 5

Has been competitive working through the grades of late, highlighted by a win 2 starts back and a 2nd in the Bart Cummings. Hard to see him gaining a start.

Odds: $27       Click Here to bet now
