Trent Williams becomes highest paid offensive lineman ever

Offensive tackle Trent Williams of Longview, Texas made National Football League history on Wednesday by becoming the highest-paid offensive lineman of all-time. Williams signed a six-year deal worth $138.06 million with the San Francisco 49ers according to Kyle Posey of SB Nation. The $23.01 million that Williams will receive per year, is now $10,000 per season more than David Bakhtiari earns with the Green Bay Packers. Bakhtiari earns $23 million per season.

Williams had spent his entire NFL career with the Washington Football Team prior to being traded to San Francisco on April 25, 2020. The former first-round pick has been selected to eight Pro Bowls in his NFL career.

In more NFL history, the Los Angeles Chargers made Corey Linsley of Youngstown, Ohio the highest-paid center ever. Linsley signed a five-year deal worth $62.5 million, after seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers.

In addition to the Kansas City Chiefs signing Joe Thuney earlier in the week, three other offensive linemen switched teams to significant deals in National Football League free agency. The Baltimore Ravens signed Kevin Zeitler of Waukesha, Wisconsin to a three-year deal worth $22 million. Zeitler was with the New York Giants the previous two seasons, and also has experience with the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns.

Meanwhile, Alex Mack of Los Angeles, California, and Kyle Long of Ivy, Virginia signed one-year contracts. Mack came to terms with the 49ers from the Atlanta Falcons for $5.5 million, and the Chiefs lured Long out of retirement for $5 million. The son of Hall of Famer Howie Long, Kyle Long had played his entire career with the Chicago Bears before initially retiring on January 6, 2020.
