Texans name Nick Caserio new general manager

According to Paulina Dedaj of FOX News on Wednesday, the Houston Texans will name Nick Caserio as their new general manager. Caserio was the director of player personnel for the New England Patriots, and will take over from Bill O’Brien, who was fired as the Texans head coach and general manager on October 5.

Caserio had extensive experience in the Patriots organization. He was their personnel assistant in 2001, offensive coaching assistant in 2002, their area scout in 2003, director of pro personnel from 2004 to 2006, wide receivers coach in 2007, and their director of player personnel from 2008 to 2020. In that period of time, Caserio won six Super Bowls in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017, and 2019.

The 2004 and 2017 Super Bowl titles interestingly were in Houston. In 2004, the Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers 32-29, and in 2017, the Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime. The Super Bowl from four years ago saw the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history. The Patriots were once down 28-3 before scoring 25 unanswered second-half points to force overtime.

Caserio was a quarterback at John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio from 1995 to 1998. It is there where he built a working relationship with future Patriots offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels. He was also an assistant coach for two years at Saginaw Valley State (1999 and 2000) and Central Michigan (2001), before joining the Patriots in 2001.

Despite not being a wide receiver in college, Caserio was put in charge of the Patriots’ wide receivers by Bill Belichick in New England 13 seasons ago. This was the famous Patriots team that went undefeated in the regular season before losing to the New York Giants 17-14 in the Super Bowl. The two Patriots receivers who had great seasons that year were Randy Moss (98 catches, 1493 yards, 23 touchdowns), and Wes Welker (112 catches, 1175 yards, and eight touchdowns).

According to Grant Gordon of nfl.com, the Texans were very interested in Caserio in 2019, but the Patriots blocked them from interviewing him. Now in Houston, Caserio’s first decision will be whether or not to keep Romeo Crennel as head coach. Crennel was named interim head coach when the Texans fired O’Brien.
