Punishment soon expected for Canadian tennis player Vasek Pospisil

The 2021 Miami Open began on Wednesday with the men’s singles match between Vasek Pospisil of Canada and Mackenzie McDonald of the United States making the headlines. In the 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 McDonald win, Pospisil made headlines for a tantrum in the first set.

We see tantrums all the time in tennis. Some of the most notable classics came from American legends John McEnroe, Serena Williams, and Jimmy Connors. However, the Pospisil tantrum on Wednesday in south Florida was different. He publicly criticized ATP Tour Chief Andrea Gaudenzi while ranting at chair umpire Arnaud Gabas by stating that, “The leader of the ATP. Get him out here. Why am I supporting this?,” and stated that it was Gaudenzi who screamed at him during a Tuesday meeting where he was accused of uniting the players.

Pospisil initially expressed his frustration by hitting the ball out of the court and shouting at Gabas. He was given a verbal abuse penalty which cost him the set. Pospisil also threatened to sue the ATP if he lost the match by default for his comments.

It will now be interesting to see how the ATP handles the situation, and the type of discipline that Pospisil might experience. Do not be surprised if a fine or lengthy suspension is handed out. Pospisil has since apologized for his outburst.

I understand Pospisil was frustrated with his meetings with Gaudenzi. However, he needed to do a better job mentally of forgetting about the confrontation, and focusing on the task at hand when it came to the actual tennis.

In recent months, Pospisil has aligned with tennis star Novak Djokovic in attempting to create the Professional Tennis Players Association according to CNN. The PTPA is being created to protect the interests of players, but has generated significant controversy itself, and has not been welcomed by many governing bodies in the tennis world. Andy Murray for example was opposed to joining the PTPA for not including women. Ironically, as Pospisil has withdrawn his candidacy from the ATP Players Council, fellow Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime joined the council this past fall.
