Markelle Fultz to miss rest of the season with torn ACL
January 8, 2021
According to Sam Quinn of CBS Sports, Orlando Magic point guard Markelle Fultz of Upper Marlboro, Maryland will miss the remainder of the 2020-21 regular season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on Wednesday in a 105-94 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Fultz suffered the injury halfway through the first quarter while driving to the basket with the basketball.
The loss of Fultz is huge for the Magic. The team already does not have the services of shooting guard Evan Fournier, who has a back injury. The Magic had got off to a fast start as they had won six of their last eight games. Now they appear very thin at the guard positions.
In eight games this season, Fultz had averaged 12.9 points per game, 5.4 assists per game, and 3.1 rebounds per game, a field goal percentage of .394, three-point percentage of .250, and a free throw percentage of .895. He had career highs in points per game, assists per game, and free throw percentage.
Fultz had great success earlier this season against the Washington Wizards. He scored 21 points in a 130-120 Magic win over the Wizards on Boxing Day, and then had 26 points in a 120-113 win over the Wizards on December 27.
The first overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, Fultz only played 14 games in his rookie season and 19 games in 2018-19Â because of a shoulder injury. He was traded from the 76ers to the Magic on February 7, 2019. Fultz was then a regular member of the Magic in 2019-20, as he played 72 games before being injured again. Last year Fultz had an impressive triple-double in a 119-118 Magic win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
