According to CNN on Monday, the rookie cards of Tom Brady and Kobe Bryant have been each sold for over $1 million. The Bryant rookie card was sold for more than $1.795 million, and the Brady rookie card was sold for $1.32 million.
Bryant was a rookie for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1996-97 National Basketball Association season. That year he averaged only 7.6 points per game, 1.9 rebounds per game, and 1.3 assists per game. He also had a field goal percentage of .417, a three-point percentage of .375, and a free throw percentage of .819. Bryant’s best game that season came in a 109-85 Lakers win over the Golden State Warriors on April 8, 2017, as Bryant scored 24 points while coming off the bench.
Brady meanwhile spent the majority of his 2000 National Football League rookie season on the bench backing up Drew Bledsoe while with the New England Patriots. In fact, Brady only played in only one NFL game, and that was in a 34-9 Patriots loss to the Detroit Lions on November 23, 2000. Brady completed one of three pass attempts for six yards with a quarterback rating of 42.6. Brady’s six-yard pass had gone to Patriots’ tight end Rod Rutledge. Interestingly, the completed pass came in garbage time, as the Lions were in complete control of the contest, and the majority of the spectators who came to see the annual American Thanksgiving contest in Detroit had already left.
The online auction house that sold the Bryant card was Goldin Auctions. Sadly, a major reason why the Bryant rookie card went as high as it did is because he passed away a year ago in a plane crash. The company that sold Brady’s rookie card was PWCC Marketplace.
