Karolina Muchova of Olomouc, Czech Republic delivered the biggest win of her professional tennis career on Saturday. Muchova, the 2023 French Open finalist, defeated Victoria Mboko of Canada in the final of the Qatar Open, 6-4, 7-5.
With the win, Muchova went up eight spots in the WTA world rankings. She moved from 19th in the world to 11th. In Qatar, Muchova was ranked 14th, while Mboko was ranked 10th. In another interesting statistic, Mboko was the only seeded player Muchova defeated throughout the entire tournament.
Despite not playing a seeded player, Muchova beat two formidable opponents en route to the final. They included two-time grand slam finalist Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the round of 16 (5-2), and two-time grand slam semifinalist Maria Sakkari of Greece in the semifinals, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Pliskova, who reached the final of the United States Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2021, Â withdrew from her match against Muchova because of a knee injury. She has been dealing with ankle injuries over the past year. Sakkari, meanwhile reached the semifinals of the French Open and United States Open in 2021.
A major reason for Muchova’s success over Mboko in the final was winning percentage on second serve points. Muchova was at 62%, while Mboko was at 0%. Muchova also broke Mboko three times in eight opportunities.
Interestingly, Muchova has only won two WTA titles in her entire career. The first came in 2019 when she defeated Magda Linette 6-1, 6-1 in the final of the Korea Open.
After winning the Qatar Open, Muchova has withdrawn from the Dubai Tennis Championship this week. Muchova’s next tennis tournament now appears to be Indian Wells.
