Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to retire after the 2022 French Open
April 8, 2022
According to David Kane of tennis.com, 2008 Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of Le Mans, France has decided he will retire from professional tennis following the 2022 French Open at the age of 36. In nine ATP matches in 2021, Tsonga only posted a record of one win and eight losses.
Tsonga’s biggest claim to fame was reaching the 2008 Australian Open final, where he lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 to Novak Djokovic of Serbia. This was in fact Djokovic’s first grand slam title of the 20 he has won in his tennis career. Djokovic has the second most grand slam titles all-time, and is only one back of Spain’s Rafael Nadal for the most ever.
At the 2008 Australian Open, Tsonga was unseeded. He upset the ninth seed Andy Murray of Great Britain in the first round, 7-5, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6, the eighth seed Richard Gasquet of France, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in the fourth round, the 14th seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, 7-5, 6-0, 7-6, in the quarterfinals, and the second seed Nadal, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals.

Tsonga also won 18 ATP tournaments. Of his 18 titles, two were part of the ATP Masters 1000 Series. In 2008, Tsonga defeated David Nalbandian of Argentina 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the final of the Paris Masters, and in 2014, beat Roger Federer of Switzerland 7-5, 7-6 in the final of the Canadian Open. The tournament that Tsonga won the most was the Moselle Open in France, of which he won four times.
