Jeongeun Lee shoots a 61 to take the Evian Masters lead

It was a magical Friday for Jeong-eun Lee6 of South Korea in the second round of the 2021 Evian Championship in France. Lee6 shot a 10-under-par 61, and in the process, tied the lowest round in women’s golf major history, according to Ali Stafford of Sky Sports.

The -10 for Lee6 equaled the -10 that Hyo-joo Kim of South Korea put together in the first round of the 2014 Evian Masters. However, even though Kim started out hot seven years ago in France, she was only one-under-par over the last 54 holes, and hung on to beat Karrie Webb of Australia by a stroke, Mi Jung Hur and Ha-na Jang of South Korea by two strokes each, and Na Yeon Choi of South Korea by three strokes.

On Friday, Lee6 had 10 birdies and zero bogeys. She birdied the first, fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, 11th, 12th, 17th, and 18th holes. To record a birdie on four consecutive holes, six birdies in seven holes, and seven birdies in nine holes of a major tournament is simply fantastic.

Heading into the third round, Lee6 is now at -15, and has a three-stroke lead over two Thai golfers. Ariya Jutanugarn and Pajaree Anannarukarn are tied for second  place at -12. Lee6, Jutanugarn, and Anannarukarn are the only other golfers in double digits under par after round two. Anannarukarn was actually the leader after the first round as she was at -6 alongside American Yealimi Noh.

Lee6 is a major champion in women’s golf from the past. She won the U.S. Women’s Open in 2019 when the major was in Charleston, North Carolina. Jutanugarn is a two-time major champion as she has won the 2016 Women’s British Open and the 2018 United States Women’s Open.
