The Wells Fargo Championship is now 36 holes in the books and a familiar Australian is in the lead. Former world number one Jason Day of Beaudesert, Australia, the 2015 PGA Championship winner, has a three-stroke lead on American Max Homa.
Day is currently at -10. He shot an opening round score of seven-under-par 63, and then a second round score of three-under-par 67. In round one, Day had eight birdies and one bogey. He birdied the first, second, fifth, 10th, 12th, 14th, 15th, and 16th holes, and bogeyed the unlucky, 13th hole. In round two, Day had five birdies and two bogeys. He birdied the second, third, eighth, 12th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the 14th and 17th holes.
The 2022 Wells Fargo Championship is taking place just outside of Washington, D.C. this week. The event normally takes place in Charlotte, North Carolina. However this year, the normal course the Wells Fargo Championship uses, the Quail Hollow Golf Club, is already hosting the 2022 President’s Cup in September.
So far in 2022, one Australian has won on the PGA Tour. That is Cameron Smith of Brisbane, Australia, who in fact has won twice. Smith’s first win was the Sentry Tournament of Champions (the January PGA event in Maui only for winners from the previous calendar year) and his second win was the Players Championship.Â
Day has 12 PGA Tour victories. However, he has not won on the PGA Tour since 2018. Ironically, it came at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, where he defeated Americans Aaron Wise and Nick Watney by two strokes.
