Jannik Sinner and Marketa Vondrousova withdraw from 2024 Olympic Games
July 25, 2024

Italy’s Jannik Sinner, the world number one, will not be competing in the men’s singles tennis tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris according to Rogers Sportsnet on Wednesday. That is because the 2024 Australian Open champion has tonsillitis. Sinner is the second grand slam singles champion to withdraw from the Olympic Games in the last 48 hours. The other is 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, who withdrew on Monday because of a hand injury.
Sinner will now be replaced by Novak Djokovic of Serbia as the number one seed at the 2024 Olympic Games. Djokovic is first even though he has not been the best player in the world over the last two months. Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, the second seed at the 2024 Olympic Games, has won the French Open and Wimbledon in 2024.
This is the second time this season Sinner has faced a significant ailment. In May, Sinner withdrew from the Madrid Open prior to his quarterfinal match against Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada because of a hip injury.
Sinner and Vondrousova have joined a significant list of players who have decided not to compete at the Olympic Games. Others who have withdrawn due to injury include Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, the world number three and 2023 Australian Open champion and 2024 Australian Open champion (shoulder), Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, the 2022 and 2023 Wimbledon finalist and 2022 United States Open finalist (knee), Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, the 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist (knee), Holger Rune of Denmark (wrist), Jiri Lehecka of Czech Republic (back), 2017 and 2020 United States Open semifinalist Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain (leg), and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (back).
