Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the NFL season after doctors found blood clots in both of his lungs, according to reports from ESPN and NFL Network.
Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, and the Eagles released a joint statement on Monday (US time) saying the quarterback has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, ESPN reported. That means a blood clot travelled from his leg to his lungs.
The statement said Hurts is “clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations”, but he cannot take part in football activities while on blood-thinning medication.
“Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” the statement said. “We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.”
Sources told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the treatment is expected to sideline Hurts for at least three months.

According to ESPN, Hurts took a cleat to his calf against the Los Angeles Rams on 4 October. An ultrasound in London revealed a superficial blood clot before the Eagles’ Week 5 game against Jacksonville, but he was cleared to play and attempted 40 passes in the 19-17 loss.
A follow-up ultrasound back in Philadelphia last week showed the clot had moved, and the Eagles ruled him out of the Week 6 game against Carolina before placing him on injured reserve on Saturday (US time).
Tanner McKee started in his place and completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown in a 25-14 home loss to the Panthers.
Hurts, the Super Bowl LIX MVP, had not missed more than two games in a season since becoming Philadelphia’s starting quarterback in 2021, ESPN noted. AP also reported that he is out for the season.
