Jaguars name Darrell Bevell interim head coach after firing Urban Meyer
December 17, 2021

The Urban Meyer era in Jacksonville has come to an end, and it was short and sweet. On Thursday, the Jaguars fired their head coach after Jacksonvuille only won two of 13 football games.
There were several incidents that led to the firing according to Steve Gardner of USA Â Today. Meyer had hired Chris Doyle as the Jaguars’s strength and conditioning coach in February, but was only there one day after it was revealed that Gardner allegedly used racist comments in bullying players at the University of Iowa. Meyer was also fined $100,000 for violating practice rules during training camp, socialized with friends instead of being on the team plane after a Jaguars’ game in Cincinnati, and was accused of kicking Jacksonville kicker Josh Lambo in the leg during a pregame warmup in the preseason.
Meyer had a lot of success in college football as a head coach at Florida and Ohio State, but it never translated into success at the NFL level. A major reason is because of the Jaguars struggles offensively. Their 180 points is the second fewest in the league. Only the Houston Texans have scored fewer points than Jacksonville, as they have had 177.
Interestingly, it is now Jacksonville’s offensive co-ordinator Darrell Bevell who is taking over on an interim basis. The 51-year-old from Yuma, Arizona, was the interim head coach of the Detroit Lions last year, when the team fired Matt Patricia. Bevell also has NFL coaching experience as an assistant coach with the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks.
From a fantasy perspective my biggest question from Bevell is how the team plans to utilize their star running back James Robinson moving forward. Robinson has only had 14 carries for 28 yards the last two weeks and was in Meyer’s doghouse after a fumble on December 5 in a 37-7 spanking at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams.
