‘I’d love to stay’: Su’A opens talks for new Dragons deal
March 29, 2024
Jaydn Su’A has driven a knife straight through rumours he’s been considering a reunion with former coach Wayne Bennett, declaring he’d “love to stay” with the Dragons and be a key part of the project Shane Flanagan is building.
“I’d love to stay because I love the club. It’s been a pretty tough two-and-a-bit years and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Su’A told AAP media earlier this week.

It’s a massive early win for a club that has been run through the wring recently, not least considering the Zac Lomax saga that has been plastered across newspapers since the season began. Su’A’s comments aren’t the only good news on that front either; the 26-year-old is also already in preliminary talks to extend his stay.
The Sporting Base has recently heard things are moving at a slow pace right now. Su’A has already said similar, admitting it’s “a week-by-week thing.”
The Dragons second-rower, who has played 33 games and scored nine tries for the joint-venture since moving from South Sydney, is confident he has a place in the new Red V plan. “The club won’t lose the player they want to keep. If I’m that player, then I’m sure I’ll be here.”
Su’A is actually free to talk to other NRL clubs deals, with his current Dragons deal only running until the end of 2024, but it’s looking more and more likely he and Flanagan will settle on a bargain within the next few weeks. The Sporting Base has not heard about any formal offers from rivals.
As previously mentioned, the Su’A-Bennett reunion has been the biggest report from News Corp media, but Su’A—who said he has the “ultimate respect” for the Dolphins boss—has shaken his head at the rumours. “I have a lot of respect for him and I trust him… but no one knows what he’s doing and I’m not holding my eggs in that basket.”

The Dragons next play against the Manly Sea Eagles this Easter Saturday. Su’A returns to the starting lineup after a quad niggle forced him to miss the team’s rollercoaster loss to the Cowboys.
