Houston Texans decide not to trade Brandin Cooks and Deshaun Watson at the trade deadline
November 4, 2021
One of the biggest stories in the National Football League on Tuesday was not who was traded at the NFL trade deadline, but who was not. The Houston Texans were very active over the last week, as they dealt running back Mark Ingram to the New Orleans Saints, and defensive lineman Charles Omenihu to the San Francisco 49ers. However two players who were very likely to be traded, remain Houston Texans for now. I am referring to quarterback DeShaun Watson and wide receiver Brandin Cooks.
Watson has not played a single game for the Texans this season. That is because he is on the “non-injury reasons/personal matter list”, which is not connected to any physical injury. The “non-injury reasons/personal matter list” the Texans are referring to is the fact that Watson is facing 22 civil lawsuits accusing him of sexual misconduct and sexual assault according to Aaron Reiss of The Athletic.

When Watson was quarterbacking the Texans over the last three years, he was selected to the Pro Bowl each time. In 2020, he even led the NFL with 4823 yards. There was talk over the last few days that Watson would be traded to the Miami Dolphins, but the Dolphins have decided to keep their commitment to Tua Tagovailoa for now.
Meanwhile, Cooks was upset with the Texans for trading Ingram, and it just seemed like a matter of time that he would be traded too. But the Texans could not find a suitable trade partner, so therefore Cooks stays. This season Cooks has 51 catches for 585 yards and two touchdowns.
The Texans currently have a record of one win and seven losses. They are last in the AFC South.
