Horses You Must Follow Next Start
November 13, 2019
Dean Watling has been hard at work viewing replays and sectional times to find horses you must follow and this week’s review covers Melbourne Cup week as well as the Golden Eagle meeting.
Madam Rouge
- Race: 7
- Distance: 1400m
- Grade: Group 2
The Waller-trained Zoustar filly has turned a corner this prep and we can defiantly follow her. Loved her first-up run where the writing was on the wall, second up she saluted after an unideal run in the straight but still was too strong.
Her Hot Danish was an absolute forgive forget and look forward to her next start. Peeled into the straight and deadset was in cruise control behind the leaders from the 400m-200m, nowhere to go and was a moral beat for mine. Martin Harley did the right thing and pulled her out of it and saved the legs. Will come up overs next start and will look to stay at 1400m or rise to 1600m. Love when mares are in form they will stay inform, vice versa for not being in form. This girl will win a G1.

Behemoth
- Race: 7
- Distance: 1500m
- Grade: Open
The All Too Hard gelding went around $101 in the inaugural Golden Eagle, big overs for mine. Run prior was sneaky good on a Randwick track which offered little for run on horses. 2nd fastest 600,400,200m of his race and those sectionals stacked up overall for the meeting, 4th fastest 600m – 32.91. That’s low flying and many would have missed his run.
Sat 3 wide the trip and a lot closer in the Golden Eagle and was still there with his heart on his sleeve at the 50m. Kolding form was the form of the spring in the middle distance ranks and I believe this gelding is right up there. Quite run and some cover and he will see out 1600m comfortably, group winner has his name all over it.
Surprise Baby
- Race: 7
- Distance: 3200m
- Grade: Group 1
Wow, what a performance in the 2019 Melbourne cup, never been more sure of a horse beaten by tempo. They absolutely crawled giving those off the speed not much opportunity. He positioned 19th in the run and was set an impossible task heading into the home straight, tracked wide around the bend and had no horse to pull him into the run, to get within 0.9L of the winner Vow And Declare was outstanding. The more you watch the reply the more he was something beat.
Figures back it up also; 2nd fastest 600m home – 33.91 and 5th fastest one the day. 4th fastest 200m – 11.55 and 7th overall for the day. Off a slow tempo, no horse to track into the race, covered the most ground of any horse in the race and not to mention only his 11th start. He is the horse to follow into the autumn for mine. Has the ability and the heart to reach the top of the staying ranks in Australia and can aim up overseas.
