World number 99 Holger Rune of Gentofte, Denmark is still hopeful to play at the 2026 United States Open. The three-time grand slam quarterfinalist and former world number four tore his Achilles at the 2025 Stockholm Open last October and has not played on the ATP Tour since.
At the time of the injury, there was speculation that we would not see Rune for the entire 2026 tennis season, and he would not be available until 2027. However, Rune has been training very hard as of late, and hopes to be back on the tennis court very soon.
Rune recently put a comment on X. “I see conclusions on me withdrawing from UsOpen. I did not withdraw. I am working super hard everyday and as soon as I am ready, I am ready. I hope it will be UsOpen.”
The reason for the confusion. is because Rune told Andy Roddick in his podcast the following. “We’re looking to maybe start my comeback with Davis Cup at home – that could be a possibility, and I would love that. Getting my comeback in front of all my Danish fans would be amazing.”
Denmark is scheduled to play Bulgaria in 2027 Davis Cup qualifying in Hillerod, Denmark from September 18-20. Denmark is having to qualify for the 2027 Davis Cup after losing to Croatia in the first round of qualification in February. However, even though Rune said starting his return at the Davis Cup was “a possibility,” he has now also stated his return could be at the final grand slam of the 2026 tennis season.
