The Los Angeles Rams are releasing kicker Harrison Mevis and signing Blake Grupe off the New York Jets’ practice squad, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported on Tuesday (US time).

The move, reported by NFL.com, comes less than a day after Mevis missed both of his field-goal attempts in the Rams’ 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. The Associated Press also reported the change, citing a source.

Mevis missed from 50 yards on the Rams’ opening drive, then had a potential 48-yard winner blocked by Bills defensive end Greg Rousseau in overtime. Tyler Bass went on to kick a 45-yard winner for Buffalo.

“I felt like I hit it good,” Mevis said after the game, according to USA Today. “That’s all I can tell you. I mean, I hit it good, gave it a chance. I’ll have to look.”

McVay’s verdict

Rams coach Sean McVay did not hide his frustration after the loss, which dropped Los Angeles to 2-3. “In the kicking game, especially with our PAT/field goal, not even close to good enough. It cost us the game tonight,” McVay said, per USA Today, adding: “Yeah, I’m going to evaluate everything.”

McVay also took the blame for his overtime play-calling before the blocked kick. “I’m sick that we came up short, and I’ll be regretting kicking that and not having a better call to be able to go for it on third down and go to fourth or whatever it was,” he said. “And that’s on me.”

A tough second season

Mevis, nicknamed the “Thiccer Kicker”, went 12 of 13 on field goals and 39 of 39 on extra points in 2025, but has made only five of his nine field-goal attempts this season, NFL.com reported. CBS Sports said his 55.6 per cent success rate ranks last in the NFL.

Who is Blake Grupe?

Grupe, 27, went undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2023 and has kicked for the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts. The Jets claimed him off waivers in August and kept him on their practice squad, and he has not kicked in a game this season.

He has made 81.9 per cent of his career field goals, with a long of 60 yards, and 98 per cent of his extra points, according to CBS Sports.
