Rory McIlroy ends drought with third win at Quail Hollow
May 10, 2021
Rory McIlroy is back in the winner’s circle after taking home the Wells Fargo Championship for the third time in his career.
The Northern Irishman has moved back into the top 10 of the world golf rankings sitting at seventh. It is now his 19th PGA tour victory and the first time he has won a tournament three times.
Heading to the final hole, McIlroy was 11 under par, two shots ahead of Abraham Ancer who had a late run with birdies on 15, 16 and 17.
The nerves of not having won since 2019 was evident as McIlroy sprayed his tee shot left and narrowly missing out on the hazard. He did, however, need to take a drop as his ball was nestled deep into the grass within the hazard line.

After taking the one-shot penalty, McIlroy managed to make bogey and secure his first win since the WGC-HSBC Champions event in China. He was bogey-free heading into the 18th hole and carded a final round 68.It was a remarkable performance from the Northern Irishman who first won on the PGA tour at Quail Hollow in 2010. This was also his first win as a father, and he was greeted by his wife and daughter during celebrations.
“It has felt like a long time,” McIlroy said.
“I felt good about my game coming in here… but I wasn’t expecting to come and win first week out again.”
This was McIlroy’s first start since being cut at the Masters and time will tell to see if this will be a catalyst for another run of dominant form from the 32-year-old.
