Patrick Reed leads at midway point of 2020 US Open

Patrick Reed of San Antonio, Texas leads at the midway point of the 2020 United States Open from the Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. Reed is at -4 and has a one stroke lead on his nearest competitor, fellow American Bryson DeChambeau of Modesto, California.

Reed, who had a hole in one in round one on Thursday, only had a score of even on Friday. However in round two a score of even par was an excellent score as high winds throughout a significant part of the day, made it much more difficult to have a strong round of golf. There were only three players during the entire second round who had a score under par. They were DeChambeau, who posted a score of -2, Bubba Watson of Bagdad, Florida, who had a score of -1, and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, who also shot a one-under-par 69. Matsuyama is currently tied for seventh at even par, and Watson is tied for 12th at one over par.

After DeChambeau, there are four other golfers in striking distance of Reed. Harris English of Valdosta, Georgia, Justin Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky, and Rafa Cabrera-Bello of Spain, are tied for third place at -2. Meanwhile, Jason Kokrak of Warren, Ohio is three strokes back of Reed and all alone in sixth place at -1.

Thomas Pieters of Belgium actually had the lead at -6 for a period of time in the early stages of round two. However, he went six-over-par on the back nine, to finish the day at even par. Justin Thomas was the round one leader, but was also over par for his score in round two, as he shot a three-over par 73.

Of the players in contention at the moment, two are major champions from the past. Reed won the 2018 Masters and Justin Thomas won the 2017 PGA Championship.
