Padraig Harrington of Dublin, Ireland has tested positive for coronavirus according to Vincent Whelan of The Irish Sun on Wednesday. Harrington was to compete at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, California this weekend, but is now forced to withdraw.

Harrington has stated on Twitter, that he has symptoms of a cold. As a result of Harrington’s withdrawal from the tournament, he has been replaced in the field by Sang-moon Bae of South Korea.

The three-time major champion is now 49 years of age, and seven months away from joining the Champions Tour. Harrington’s major titles came at the 2007 and 2008 British Open, and 2008 PGA Championship.

At the 2007 British Open from Carnoustie, Harrington beat Sergio Garcia of Spain in a playoff after shooting a score of seven-under-par. Then at the 2008 British Open from Royal Birkdale, Harrington defended his title by beating Ian Poulter of England by four strokes. Harrington’s winning score was a +3, and is the highest score that a player has recorded in winning a major in the last 14 years. Harrington is also one of only three golfers over the last 40 years to win the British Open in back-to-back years. The others are Americans Tom Watson (1982, 1983), and Tiger Woods (2005, 2006).

Harrington’s third major title came at the 2008 PGA Championship from Oakland Hills in Michigan. Harrington had a score of -3, and beat Ben Curtis of the United States and Garcia by two strokes.

The state of California continues to be hammered by coronavirus. Over 3.4 million people have now tested positive in the state alone, and there have been 45,721 deaths related to the disease.

The 2021 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is taking place this year without amateurs. Patrick Cantlay has the lead after round one at -10.
