Justin Thomas leads after first round of the 2020 U.S. Open
September 18, 2020
Justin Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky leads after the first round of the 2020 United States Open from the Winged Foot West Course in Mamaroneck, New York. Thomas shot a first round score of -5, which was the best round of golf ever for a U.S. Open held at Winged Foot.
Thomas had six birdies and one bogey. He had birdies on the first, sixth, ninth, 10th, 11th, and 18th holes, alongside a bogey on the par three third hole where he posted a score of four. For Thomas, he was able to rebound mentally after going from bunker to bunker on a single approach shot on the par-four 17th hole. Remarkably, Thomas was able to save par.
There is no doubt that the golfers had the luxury of posting numerous strong rounds of golf in favourable weather conditions. There was minimal wind, which allowed 21 golfers to record a score under par. Right now the cut appears to be three over par.
Thomas leads Americans Patrick Reed and Matthew Wolff, and Belgium’s Thomas Pieters by a stroke. Reed actually had a hole in one on the seventh hole. Reed was one of two golfers to get a hole in one on Thursday. The other was Will Zalatoris of Plano, Texas.
Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa, and Lee Westwood of England are the three golfers two strokes off the lead at -3. Meanwhile, there are six golfers at -2. They are Americans Jason Kokrak, Brendon Todd, Harris English, and Xander Schauffele, alongside Spain’s Rafa Cabrera Bello, and Chile’s Joaquin Niemann.
