Skyhook has won the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Royal Randwick, edging out $71 outsider Decorum by the barest of margins as hot favourite Sheza Alibi finished 11th.
Ridden by Chad Schofield for trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, Skyhook ($11) jumped from barrier 16 and beat Decorum (Tim Clark, Michael Freedman) by 0.02 lengths, with Beiwacht (Nash Rawiller, Chris Waller) third, according to Racing NSW’s interim results.
The win is worth $5.25 million to Skyhook’s connections, in the first running of the Golden Eagle as a Group 1 race. Decorum’s second place earns $2 million and Beiwacht’s third $1 million.
Sheza Alibi beaten at $1.50
Sheza Alibi, trained by Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman and ridden by Luke Nolen, started the $1.50 favourite but could only finish 11th, 4.79 lengths from the winner. Autumn Boy, with Hong Kong champion Zac Purton aboard, ran fifth for Chris Waller.

Schofield picked up the ride only last week after Kerrin McEvoy, who had ridden Skyhook in 10 of his 16 starts, lost his appeal against an eight-meeting whip suspension from the Geelong Cup, AAP reported.
“You move on, but I just feel sorry for Kerrin,” Ryan said at the time. “He’s done a heap of work with him and knows him like the back of his hand.”
Skyhook came into the race second to Apocalyptic in the Silver Eagle (1300m) at Randwick on 17 October.
