Gold Coast Lands Aidan Schubert and Sam Butler From Hawthorn

Hawthorn forwards Aidan Schubert and Sam Butler are set to join Gold Coast after a trade was agreed on Monday, AFL.com.au reported, with five draft picks changing hands between the clubs.

AFL.com.au said the Hawks pair have been traded to the Suns, with AFL Media’s Callum Twomey detailing the pick package. Zero Hanger separately labelled the move a done deal involving five pick swaps.

The pick package

According to AFL.com.au’s deal box, Gold Coast sends its 2028 first-round pick, 2027 second-round pick and 2028 second-round pick, and receives Schubert, Butler, a 2027 third-round pick tied to Gold Coast, and Hawthorn’s 2028 first-round pick. Hawthorn sends Schubert, Butler, that 2027 third-rounder and its 2028 first-rounder, and receives Gold Coast’s 2028 first-round, 2027 second-round and 2028 second-round selections. Twomey’s summary matches that framework: the clubs swap 2028 first-round picks, and the Hawks upgrade a 2027 third-rounder into a 2027 second-rounder while also landing a 2028 second-rounder.

Why the Suns moved

AFL.com.au said Schubert opted for the Suns after Ben King’s arrival at Hawthorn and the re-signing of Calsher Dear, with greater opportunity awaiting on the Coast. The athletic tall was the No. 23 pick in last year’s draft and made his AFL debut in round 21 this season. Zero Hanger said Schubert is understood to have agreed to a five-year deal at Gold Coast.

Butler, 23, has been limited to eight games in 2026 and 33 across five seasons at Hawthorn, AFL.com.au reported. Zero Hanger noted he was drafted with pick 21 in 2021 and has not played more than nine matches in any season, with Zach Merrett’s arrival and Will Day’s midfield role further squeezing his path.

Trade-period context

The move closes a Hawks-Suns thread that sat alongside King’s free-agency switch. AFL.com.au’s earlier Inside Trading coverage had flagged Monday as the likely lodge window once the framework was in place. Club statements beyond the AFL.com.au report and Twomey’s package were still to land when the story broke; AFL.com.au noted more was to come.
