In Sunday’s final, Germany received a significant performance from Alexander Zverev. In men’s singles action, Zverev defeated Hubert Hurkacz 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. Zverev lost the first set tiebreak 7-3, but bounced back to win the second set tiebreak, 8-6. Germany went trough the group stage with a record of one win and one loss. They defeated Italy in Group D action, but then lost to France. Germany was one of two nations not to win their group, but still reach the quarterfinals. The other country was China.
In the quarterfinals, Germany beat Greece two matches to one. Germany then beat Australia two matches to one in the semifinals.
The United States won the 2023 United Cup. The American team of Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz beat Italy in the finals.
While the 2024 United Cup was going on, there were two ATP 250 events over the last week. At the Hong Kong Open, Andrey Rublev of Russia defeated Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland in the final 6-4, 6-4. At the Brisbane International, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria defeated Holger Rune of Denmark in the final 7-6, 6-4.
There are two ATP more events this week leading up to the Australian Open. That is the Adelaide International and Auckland Open in New Zealand. Be aware that the Australian Open begins a day earlier this year. It will start on Sunday rather than Monday.
