Germany and Spain reach semifinals of 2021 ATP Cup

Germany and Spain have reached the semifinals of the 2021 ATP Cup. They are in the final four alongside Italy and Russia. On Friday, group play wrapped up after an unexpected day of pause due to the fact a hotel worker tested positive for coronavirus at the same hotel many Australian Open players were staying at.
In Group A action, Germany won the group after a 2-1 win over the defending champion, Serbia. The Germans got two wins from Jan-Lennard Struff. First Struff beat Dusan Lajovic, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Then Struff teamed up with Alexander Zverev, to beat Novak Djokovic and Nikola Cacic, 7-6, 5-7, 10-7.
In Group B, Spain won the group despite a 2-1 loss to Greece. Spain will now play Italy in one semifinal, while Germany will play Russia in the other semifinal.

In other tennis news, five-time major singles champion Tony Trabert of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 90 according to the Associated Press. Trabert won the 1953 and 1955 U.S. Open, the 1954 and 1955 French Open, and 1955 Wimbledon. He also won five more men’s doubles titles. In 1970, Trabert was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. After retirement, Trabert was a tennis and golf analyst for CBS from 1971 to 2004, and was the president of the International Tennis Hall of Fame from 2001 to 2011.
Meanwhile, the draw is out for the 2021 Australian Open. The two best first round women’s matches are Venus Williams of the United States versus Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, along with Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic versus Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia. The three best men’s singles first round matches are Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain versus Kei Nishikori of Japan, Kevin Anderson of South Africa versus Matteo Berrettini of Italy, and Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria versus Marin Cilic of Croatia.
