Germany and Belgium have named new national team men’s soccer coaches. At the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, Belgium reached the quarterfinals before losing 2-1 to Spain. Meanwhile, Germany reached the round of 32, before shockingly being eliminated by Paraguay on penalty kicks.
The new Belgian head coach is Mark van Bommel and the new German head coach is Jurgen Klopp. You could make the argument that Belgium met expectations at the World Cup, as they ended up facing the eventual World Cup champions in the quarterfinals. However, the fact that Germany did not win a single knockout game would have been considered completely unacceptable to those involved in German soccer.

Van Bommel is from Maasbracht, Netherlands and takes over from Rudi Garcia of Nemours, France. He was the assistant coach for the Socceroos at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and then managed PSV Eindhoven, Germany’s Vfl Wolfsburg, and then Belgium’s Royal Antwerp. Van Bommel scored 10 international goals as a defensive midfielder for the Netherlands and helped Netherlands reach the final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He also scored 52 goals in 197 games for PSV Eindhoven and 11 goals in 123 games for Bayern Munich.
Klopp is from Stuttgart, Germany and takes over from Julian Nagelsmann of Landsberg am Lech. Klopp previously managed Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. With the Reds, he won the 2019 UEFA Champions League and the 2019-20 Premier League. Klopp also won two Bundesliga titles (2010-11 and 2011-12) with Borussia Dortmund. As a player, Klopp was a striker and defender. He had 52 goals in 325 games with Mainz 05.
