For the second time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, Spain is the champion. On Sunday, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 World Cup Final.
The Spanish goal scorer was Ferran Torres of Folos, Spain. Torres, who is a winger and forward for FC Barcelona, scored in the 106th minute. Torres’s goal came on a beautiful pass from Nico Williams. What stood out from Williams’s pass is the fact he headed the ball perfectly to Torres.
It was a sensational game for Spanish manager Luis de la Fuente. He brought on Torres and Williams as substitutes, and they were instrumental in providing Spain with the necessary offense.
This was Torres’s 25th goal in 65 international games with Spain. It was Torres’s first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and it could not have come at a better time.
The statistic that stood out the most from the 2026 FIFA World Cup was shots on target. Spain had 12 and Argentina had zero. This was the first time ever in the World Cup Final that a team had zero shots on target. Spain’s defensive excellence was on display throughout the entire World Cup as they only gave up one goal in seven games.
Another key statistic was team discipline. Spain had zero yellow cards, while Argentina had seven yellow cards. Due to the fact Enzo Fernandez was awarded two yellow cards, he was ejected from the game. In football (soccer), two yellow cards is equal to one red card.
It was believed by many that Spain had gone up 1-0 in the 93rd minute. However the goal was disallowed because of a controversial foul by Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino.
Spain’s first World Cup win came in 2010. In Johannesburg, South Africa they defeated the Netherlands in the final 1-0.
