FREE: Belmont Selections & Staking Plan: Saturday 11th June

Poncho time today at Belmont, with the track a soft 5 currently with rain forecast consistently throughout the entire day. Rail goes to the 4m and a very tricky card greets us, with plenty of very open, competitive races which when you throw in the added X-factor of the very wet track, makes things that little bit more interesting.

Race 1 – 11:59AM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK PLATE (1400 METRES)

Race 4 – 1:45PM HEINEKEN 3 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

3. Angelic Miss – 2. Panzdown – 1. Mervyn – 7. Bright Diamond

Angelic Miss

I love this mare, I think she has got one of the best turn of foot in WA. Resumes here off the two really sharp pieces of work when not asked for much effort and think a fast run 1000m fresh is a really good kick-off point. Likely lands on the outside of Bright Diamond in the run where from 3 Chris can just keep Merv in his sights before he decides to push the button. Chris has had the option of riding her, Buzzoom or Bright Diamond here and has stuck with her, which I feel is a pretty good inkling as to where she is at. Huge positive getting her toe into the ground, she’s undefeated on rain-affected surfaces and I feel the biggest danger comes in the form of the stablemate Panzdown.

Panzdown

This bloke is just an electric 1000m sprinter and this is very smart use of the claim to bring him down to the 57.5kgs. Loves the sting out, flies fresh and if Holly can land him somewhere near the back of Angelic Miss in the run, I think he’s the one capable of gunning her down and at current prices will be happy to back and save on the pair. Always a tough ask for an apprentice on a get-back sprinter who likely ends up near last, but Holly has developed a nice affinity with him and has won on him before.

0.5 Units WIN

Mervyn really left alone could just about pinch it if the others are asleep at the wheel, not sure a really wet track works in his favour however despite the fact he has won on a Heavy track, these are panels above what he beat that day.

Race 5 – 2:24PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (2100 METRES)

1. Acting God – 10. Alkaline – 7. Mojo Rhythm – 6. Phenomenal Anomaly

Acting God

Really like one here in the staying event in the form of the Bruce Watkins trained Acting God. Think he is screaming out for a staying journey at this stage of his preparation. He’s 5th up, rock hard fit, have loved the way he’s savaged the line at his past 2 runs at the mile. He’s bred to get a trip. Has won out to the 1800m, just needs to handle the step out to the 2100m and if he can get some luck from cuddled away on the fence. Really like that they’ve attacked this trip for the first time on the 7 day back-up as well. Traffic and whether he can get into clear air early enough to pick up and sprint is going to be the small query, but who better to be aboard in a staying event of this nature then the Fish, love the fact he sticks.

2 Units WIN

Alkaline

Alkaline comes from a form reference I’m not big on, but gets a senior rider and is in a yard that is so good at keeping these stayers up and performing over a consistent period of time, I thought he was easily the run of the race from the apprentice challenge and if Lucy can find room from the inside stall, he loves it wet and will be making his presence felt.

Race 6 – 3:00PM GLENROY CHAFF HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

9. Enticing – 8. Multinational – 10. Mickey Blue Eyes – 4. Memorable Miss

Enticing

First leg of the quaddie is as close to an an absolute raffle as you can get from my perspective in a race that has a difficult speed map to navigate, but there are a couple of runners I think are over the odds and worth small plays. Enticing is an absolute swimmer and is more than capable here with the right run, thought his run 1st up in unsuitable conditions was very good and his trial prior was just as impressive, going very well and will love getting his toe into the ground, the gate the sore spot.

0.5 Units WIN

Multinational

Really liked the recent trial of Multinational, who has a win on a soft 6 and a 2nd to noted wet-tracker Searching Rocs on a heavy track on his resume. Should lob in a lovely spot from barrier 5, the Parnham yard had a fill up midweek and I think $9 looks a nice price to find out if he can continue the stable’s good form. Very open race, could make a case for almost every runner in the field, happy to have a couple of small plays.

Race 7 – 3:37PM VALE MERV POSNER HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

2. It’sarayday – 7. Timely Outburst – 10. Cross Statement – 3. State Attorney

Race 8 – 4:15PM SEACORP – HYPERION STAKES (1600 METRES)

10. God Has Chosen – 11. Notorious One – 12. Kaptain Kaos – 2. Massimo

The manner in which God Has Chosen was able to win the Belmont Sprint, given where he settled in running on a day where it was increasingly difficult to make any sort of ground from worse than midfield, at WFA mind you, was just remarkable. $1.80 from an absolutely perfect draw out to arguably a more suitable trip you could argue is potentially a slice of overs?

Can you mount a case to get him beat? Personally, I don’t think so.

I think Notorious One is building towards something, I’ve always had a huge opinion of him and he got absolutely no luck in the Sprint when held up virtually the entirety of the straight which is a recipe for disaster for a big, striding horse like him that needs room. The only problem is barrier 1 is arguably the worst barrier he could have drawn, where on earth does he get to from there? Most likely buried and doesn’t get a real crack at them once again. If he finds room, the wetter the better and he is capable of being the real testing material. $11.00 available is currently over my price.

They are quite simply the only two I could mount a case for. Kaptain Kaos does draw a gate for the first time this prep and the mile is his trip, Chris Parnham sticking is a positive but I just think he is a rung below the two mentioned runners in terms of class.

Race 9 – 4:50PM CROWN TOWERS HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

13. Heart Of Coeur – 14. Savanik – 11. Vital Flirt – 15. Testing Love

$6.50 the field to end a terribly difficult Belmont card.

Heart Of Coeur

Heart Of Coeur flew home fresh, completely defying the pattern on the day and has a terrific 2nd up record. He’s got solid wet track form and if Tash can find a back to follow into the straight and the middle of the track is the place to be by this stage of proceedings, then he can blouse them here.

0.5 Units WIN

Savanik

Really liked the return run of Savanik. Settled far closer than I anticipated showing a gate speed I didn’t know she had, and loomed as the only danger to the eventual winner Featherweight in the straight there. You’d anticipate there’s improvement there, gets 1.5kg swing on that runner and being by Savabeel, you know she will swim with 2/2 on soft tracks already in her career. Maps beautifully, over the odds at the current $11.00 quote.

0.5 Units WIN

The chances certainly don’t end there, Testing Love is racing beautifully under Stephen Rowe, Vital Flirt will get through the going and I thought the most recent trial was superb, Fashion Queen‘s run last start was far better than it appears on paper and Billy Ray maps for the most economic of runs here. Haven’t even mentioned Featherweight who was an impressive last start winner and maps for an identically similar run here. Serious quaddie leg.
