Four golfers to represent Australia at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo

The Olympic golf field for men’s and women’s golf was officially set on Tuesday according to Kyle Porter of CBS Sports. Australia will be represented by Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman on the men’s side, as well as Minjee Lee and Hannah Green on the women’s side.

Smith, of Brisbane, is currently ranked 29th in the world. So far this year, he teamed up with Leishman to win the 2021 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Smith and Leishman ended up beating 2010 British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and 2011 Masters champion Carl Schwartzel in a playoff. This was the second time in Smith’s career that he won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He also won the title in 2017 with Jonas Blixt of Sweden. Smith’s other PGA title came at the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii.

Leishman of Warrnambool, is currently ranked 32nd in the world. In addition to winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans this year with Smith, he has won five other times on the PGA Tour. They came at the 2012 Travelers Championship, the 2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational, the 2017 BMW Championship, the 2018 CIMB Classic in Malaysia, and the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open.

Lee of Perth, is currently 14th in the world. She has five wins on the LPGA Tour–the 2015 Kingsmill Championship, the 2016 Lotte Championship, the 2016 Blue Bay Championship in China, the 2018 Volvik Championship, and the 2019 Hugel-Air Premia Los Angeles Open.

Green of Perth, is the only major champion of the four Australian Olympic golfers. She won the 2019 Women’s PGA Championship in Minnesota. It was one of two LPGA wins for Green in 2019, as she also won the Cambia Portland Classic.

Back in April, Adam Scott withdrew from competing for Australia in men’s golf at the Olympic Games in Tokyo because he wanted to spend more time with family. It should be noted that Scott was ranked below Smith and Leishman in the World Golf Rankings, and would not have qualified because he was not among the top two Australians.
