According to Grant Gordon of nfl.com on Thursday, former National Football League halfback Abner Haynes of Denton, Texas passed away at the age of 86. Haynes was a three-time Pro Bowler, the American Football League Player of the Year, and American Football League Rookie of the Year.
This is the third passing in the NFL this past week. Haynes follows former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and wide receiver Jacoby Jones.Â
Haynes played eight seasons in the National Football League with four franchises from 1960 to 1967. He was with the Dallas Texans from 1960 to 1962, and remained with the franchise when the club moved to Kansas City in 1963, and remained there in 1964. Haynes then played with the Denver Broncos in 1965 and 1966, and then combined his time with the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets in 1967.
In his first AFL season with the Dallas Texans, Haynes had a significant impact in his first season of professional football in 1960. He was the American Football League Rookie of the Year and the American Football League Player of the Year. Haynes led the AFL in rushing yards (875), and rushing touchdowns (nine). This was the first of three straight years that Haynes led the AFL in rushing yards. He had nine touchdowns in 1961, and 13 touchdowns in 1962. During the 1962 season, Haynes also led the AFL in yards from scrimmage (1622), and rushing and receiving touchdowns (19).
The three seasons Haynes was selected to the Pro Bowl were 1961, 1962 and 1964. He also won the AFL Championship with the Texans in 1962. In an all-Texas battle, the Texans defeated the Houston Oilers 20-17 at Jeppesen Stadium in Houston.
