The men’s golf competition starts on Thursday from Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France. Here are the five most intriguing groups in the men’s draw.
Wyndham Clark/Hideki Matsuyama/Tommy Fleetwood
This threesome consists of American Wyndham Clark of Denver, Colorado, the 2023 United States Open champion, Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, and Tommy Fleetwood of Southport, Great Britain, the world number 14. Clark is one of only four Americans in the Olympic men’s golf competition.
Scottie Scheffler/Rory McIlroy/Ludvig Aberg
Scheffler of the United States is a two-time major champion, having won the 2022 Masters, and the 2024 Masters. McIlroy of Ireland is a four-time major champion, having won the 2011 United States Open, 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship, and the 2014 British Open. All three golfers are ranked in the top four in the world. Scheffler is first, McIroy is third, and Aberg of Sweden is fourth.

There are two multiple major champions in this group. Schauffele won the 2024 PGA Championship, the 2024 British Open, and is the reigning Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo three years ago. Straka of Austria, the 26th ranked golfer, is the best Austrian golfer ever. Day of Australia, is the 29th ranked player, and won the 2015 PGA Championship. Kim of South Korea is the 20th ranked player.

Lowry of Ireland is a major champion here as he won the 2019 British Open. Taylor of Canada won the 2023 Canadian Open and 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open. An of South Korea is 32nd in the world.
